water sampling

What is Water Sampling?

The primary and most important step in determining the microbiological quality of water is obtaining a ‘representative’ water sample. Sampling can be relatively easy if samples are obtained from a water distribution system. However, when sampling groundwater, care should be taken to ensure that the sample is obtained from a representative part of the aquifer. In certain instances, monitoring wells have to be installed, and these wells have to be ‘developed’ prior to obtaining samples.

What is a Water Sampler?

A water sampler is a device for field collection of one or more samples of water for testing. There are many different designs of water samplers. Selection or a particular sampler type depends on the type of analysis to be performed (e.g. ambient water quality or wastewater), the type of water source (e.g. a lake or pond, small stream or large river, coastal waters or deep ocean) and other factors such as ambient environmental conditions (e.g. collection of stormwater during a rain event vs. ambient water sampling during dry weather).

Types of Water Sampling devices

Commonly used water sampling devices include bailers, alpha water sampler, beta water sampler, van dorn water sampler, kemmerer water sampler, swing sampler Bailers are often used to both purge and sample small diameter shallow wells. For sediment sampling devices there is van veen grab, ekman grab and petite ponar grab.
